eric maltz is a producer from new york city and now resides in berlin, germany. he is a former employee of halcyon records from its og glory days in it s first location in red hook/carrol gardens areas of brooklyn. -eric provided a sofa to me often through-ought my 20 s and vice-versa, we both cared about music above all else- we lived and breathed music- and we helped each other survive when we were penniless - if one was up, so was the other... eric and i were roommates, friends, we looked out for each other in a rough city with tough rules. every time one of us got a job at a restaurant or record shop, within weeks we would have the other working there too. we did that for a decade. we slang records for years at halcyon- a shop on smith street which had a portrait of stevie wonder painted on the front facade- and we threw parties all around brooklyn back then too.. every shitty bar that would have us lol. we were a dope team. he s the only person who has ever touched the third rail on a subway and survived too! true story. so you know i couldn t wait to release his debut lp. proud of this guy- - levon vincent

swat s third release & detroit is in the house ! there are times in which you can clearly mark a producer s evolution. when they stop inching towards growth and make a bold statement of change in capability and vision. such is the case with this ep from detroit-based disco guru, pontchartrain. after a few years of steadily pushing out some significant pieces of work that have increasingly straddled the line between originals and edits, and nearly a decade of studio experience, his long overdue official house music debutante has arrived. featuring detroit local soul artist, coko buttafli laying down some blistering vocals with a clearly positive house music message, on top of live percussion and keys, and bold analog drum rhythms, pontch has created a solid diva-house gem. the sneaky festival-ready banger, loose , performed, mixed, and overdubbed live, provides some fantastic contrast and versatility to the release. a mr. g-esque remix by dj phenom just alexander and the musical journey of topher horn s evolving and deep version on the flipside make this a well rounded record that will undoubtedly stay in your bag for a good long while, and will find its way back in for years to come.

unknown mobile has quietly carved out a place for himself in the ever-evolving vancouver beat camp among contemporaries like mood hut, 1080p and project pablo. last years no motion 12 on a/s/l singles club was levi bruces dreamy introduction to most, and 2017 finds him stretching out a bit to further expand his palate of rhythms and textures across the five track mixed use ep for young adults. four sided pebble is a breezy bouncer woven with tickled keys, raw bass and a seamlessly organic live feel throughout. shoreline dub pulses in stuttered syncopation, but keeps its sights set on the dusk dusted horizon with delayed rhodes chords and ocean swells. country side is a total mind-melt, a pastoral graze through mazes of circuit board crop circles. the juggler churns a buttery 4/4 beat in an echo chamber, while proteus 216 dims the lights on its way out to an interstellar communications convention.

on “rest in space”, his first full length outing for music for dreams, the lp keeps a steady pace of around 90-95 bpm, but never gets repetitive with islandman taking us on a rich and ever surprising journey, full of quirky turns and mysterious instrumentations. the opener “rest in space” treats us to a funky percussion-thick rhythm that lounges into a pool of playful & jazzy horn & flute arrangements. this is followed by the epic “night wind” which sweeps across cinematic desert landscapes of synth layers and falls into a dark night time groove reminiscent of nicolas jaar & dave harrington’s darkside project. “seikleos” centers around a motorik electronic rhythm pattern (not unlike the classic electro-pop classic “popcorn”) that develops into a chugging balearic house jam while stand out track “future days” brings in a female guest vocalist to complete the album with a breezy full on groover that echoes of both sheila chandra and tom tom club. also included is the previously released digital single “agit” as well as a remix by berlin-based m.rux, toning down the heavy guitar of the original in favor of a more bouncier interpretation. the stunning “ikaru” wades in through chunks of jungle ambiance and watery percussion to lounge along on a rubbery funk bassline, coupled with a heavy laid back beat and wobbly derelict synth figures. “tawhid” is an odd mix of new wave brilliance and prog momentum that breaks into a cascade of pouring rain and surprising percussion breaks. lastly comes gorgeous eastern guitar opus “the true word of the wind” and the warm vibey dreamscape “following”. as a whole, islandman delivers a delicate buffet of influences - spanning the spectrum from hazy balearic pop to tropical new age flirts to deep spiritual psychedelic jamming.

up first is smooth, an infectious groove with lively synths scurrying about and bringing lots of dynamism to the drums. the percussion is crisp and the whole thing feels spaced out and futuristic. it’s busy and brimming with energy and will get any floor on its toes. sharp is a darker number with more menace in the drums. they are rubbery and supple and run through with edgy little synth lines. the track grows wilder as it unfolds and will really work dance floors into a lather.
once again the master joss shows just why he is such a tastemaker in the underground dance scene.

million brazilians formed in portland, oregon in 2006. founding members grant corum and suzanne stone have been central to the band since its inception, while a rotating line-up backs them depending on the latest vision for the sound. tip! the band carry out their own interpretation of a genre bending ethos that has evolved throughout the american underground. drifting between boundless compositions, focused energetic improvisations and experimental collaborations that embrace a weird sort of transcendence. their next installment red rose and obsidian was recorded in maine and engineered by big blood’s caleb mulkerin. both he and the band deliver a powerful yet fragile and personal release. the mythical and evocative recordings are inspired by maine s rugged coastlines, mournful ripples of sound wash up on the shore, whilst a lonesome, at times harrowing saxophone drifts through the rolling mountains, providing unsettling melodic interludes. electronic treatments veil organic sounds, a fleeting whistle meets spontaneously with spacey flutes, mutated rock rhythms are topped off with the soaring vocals of suzanne stone who leads the listeners into the magical world of the million brazilians.

shintaro.d is new on the scene, but this promising japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label init with this assured 12inch for jus groove it, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective dj tools heard in recent memory. that track in question is kohisikarubeki, and its remix by rhythm & soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. the b-side finds shintaro.d turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with waganamidakana being a clear highlight.

emotional response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take brain machines excellent peaks lp to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of rollmottle who refigures to the stars as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. die wilde jagd takes on mercury ripples and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and merrick adams pushes alpha moon into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of nexus vox.

coming to life on a hazy cloud of natural instrumentation and meditative composition, modern manners tap into the appetite for delicate new age musings beautifully on this debut release. amor y odio is laced with spanish guitar musings that spiral out over a simple but effective drum break that harks back to classic downtempo, while running with me edges towards a more sprightly lounge headspace while retaining the rich musicality felt on the first track. instant illusion is propelled by a bassline that wouldn t sound out of place on a house track, but here its punching out in a subtle, laid back environment that aims to get you horizontal in the most sophisticated way possible.

amsterdam based artist nthng continues to have a busy year. following up an album on lobster theremin and ep on transatlantic, he now lands on delsin with three tracks that touch on driving dub-techno and dreamy ambient. oralage opens with upbeat drum programming and gliding hits that make for a smooth flowing groove. distant pads add some spacey atmospheres and the production is effortlessly warm and driving. a souls search takes time out to drift in the cosmos, with waves of muted euphoria washing over you as you sink into clouds of ambient bliss. lastly, turn to gaia is a dubbed out techno roller, with long legged drums looping down low, reverberating chords adding weight and distant bell sounds charting the whole thing in a harmonic glow. it rounds out a super smooth and seductive ep.

with lomdit ep we have arrived at levi verspeeks 3rd solo record. three times a charm and so it will be when it crashes onto the dancefloor with tech triumph tamtam named after an unknown friend. 2nd track octo s slick, oozing groove sees right through you and pillages the floor with metal percussion. no later than 6 and a half minutes after you will be met by god s choir singing it s chorus: we smell sausage. watch out that you don t get dipped by that foxy break halfway through! knock knock. who s there? hmmm. hmmm who? hmmm, the last track on lomdit, and it knocks!

bionda e lupo are like little you ll have heard before, a boy/girl band like no other. synth wave is fed a line of modern alienation, delusory disco to a disdainful drum beat, house emptied and ridiculed. rhythms are stark, melodies are as mechanical as the lyrics. -zug der vogel- is sparse, vocals intertwine in an empty embrace whilst bars sparkle. -twoi glasza- is more playful. bright words shimmer against sweeping strings. the past is parodied across the ep but nowhere more so than in -die kinder aus dem park.- a former classic dug out before being peppered by machine gun percussion. the stilted rhyme of -eckstein- closes, a ballad of bittersweet images and lost hopes.

brain machines peaks lp was a highlight of the emotional response catalogue last year, and its only right that the album gets a high-class set of remixes to accompany it. the label have pulled out the stops here with an all-star cast, leading in with salon des amateurs dreamweaver toulouse low trax who drops a pinging, plucking version of light space. then gigi masin steps up with an illustrious revision of crystal clouds, while harmonious thelonious brings a heavy yet measured, techno-minded presence to traces. ronny & renzo round the package out with playful synth splashes on their version of eclipse predictions.

antwood (a.k.a. canada’s tristan douglas) returns to planet mu with his second album “sponsored content”. the album is more reflective than his debut, last year’s “virtuous.scr”. the relentless mood of the first album has given way to a more melodic, stripped out sound. it still shakes with speed and energy, but with more space, more moments of delicate sadness and strange cyborg pop. what comes to the fore in “sponsored content” is tristan’s gift for melody, coupled with the uncanny feeling that somehow his strange music is an entire ecosystem of it’s own.

dream control is the collaboration of a legend of the krautrock kosmiche scene and a pioneer of the german electronic scene. zeus b. held, renowned producer (gina x performance and works under his own moniker) and steve schroyder (former member of tangerine dream during their formative period) team up to deliver their debut album -zeitgeber- which celebrates their very own sound and rhythm in a cosmic journey through audio and time. the tracks are a blend of structured compositions and improvisations accented by the throat singing of kolja simon und felix monnich aka alienvoices. the album plays like a technicolor adventure through space with explorations of cosmic disco, dreamlike passages, vocoder lullabies, and space odysseys. zeus b. held began his musical career in 1972 in french progressive art-rock band eruption before joining successful german prog rock group birth control, performing and writing with them 1973 - 1978. he was one of the first musicians to use the sennheiser vocoder vsm 201 in his live sets.

(rollmottle remix) norwegian producer marius circus has been steadily carving out a name for himself over the past few years, with releases on prins thomas revered full pupp imprint, a ten minute acid tinged rework of seahawks for the ocean moon imprint and recently the launch of his very own in the garden. sentrall records very own rollmottle, one half of project sandro, steps up to deliver his take on ‘shorelines.

this second disques flegon recording is from greita. after two initial tracks on the v.a. buffet froid, the first and successful release of the french label, the parisian artist is back with his own ep faux signal. the five tracks stand out blending the different inspirations that define the ep unique sound. from house to broken beat through greitas love for jazz fusion and french library music, the piece travels with ease from contemporary dancefloors to cosy homes.

the first release on kon’s new kontemporary imprint sees the crate diggin selector, producer and remixer extraordinaire reworking george duke’s late 70s jewel “i want you for myself”.
kon’s masterful arrangement highlights the desirous pleas of lead vocalist lynn davis while showcasing the very ahead of its time instrumentation (there are even hints of larry heard to be heard here) of mr. duke’s musical masterpiece. carefully breaking down and building up the arrangement, kon even pulls out previously unheard vocal gems from george duke himself hidden in the original stems giving the listener a glimpse of the studio vibe during its recording. this release also boasts the original version taken directly from the studio masters of the highly sought after 12”. all in all floor stomping disco magic from one of the world’s best remixers further sonically enhanced by boston native caserta on the mix.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

dutch dj, producer and dekmantel family member young marco kicks things off with a beautiful, melodic, waterfall of a track. it’s a record you’ll want to play out on a yacht, while sipping on a rosé under the warm, afternoon sun. 2017 has been nothing short of an epic year for marco, having already compiled the second in the selectors compilation series for dekmantel, in addition to having released the second lp as gaussian curve, alongside gigi masin, and johnny nash. marco is in good company, as dutch-based artist suzanne kraft crafts a delightful, ambient-meets-house, summer groove, that lives at the most relaxed of paces, sitting side-by-side on the a-side. flip the record over and dekmantel favourite, and dutch house institute tom trago finds himself in a moment of blissful summer haze, with soft, sonic-pallets and waving melodies. concluding the record is long serving dekmantel mainstay, and rednose distrikt main-man awanto 3 with an analogue, and feel-good, electro-beat rhythm.
